The Bristol Press – Department of Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services hires new program assistant

BRISTOL – The Department of Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services has hired a new program assistant, James Costa.

Costa will assume the role of program assistant effective May 9 with a starting pay rate of $22.79 per hour.

In his new position, Costa will be responsible for a variety of clerical tasks, including managing the front office of the department and providing program coordination and assistance to Amry Shelby, recreation supervisor.

Shelby said that Costa emerged as “the clear candidate” following a “competitive testing and recruitment process.”

“We are very excited to have James join the Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services Department,” said Shelby. “James will bring a unique perspective and valuable experience that aligns with the department’s values. I truly expect him to impact the Bristol community in a positive way.”

Costa comes to Bristol following four years of experience working for the town of Manchester’s Department of Leisure, Family and Recreation. There, he served in a variety of roles including clerical assistant, facilities director, and, most recently, “culture lab coordinator.”

In addition, Costa also managed the “Better Manchester Magazine” and coordinated communications with community partners and other town projects.

Costa’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Connecticut.

Costa said that it is his “great pleasure” to join Bristol’s Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services Department.

“There are few cities in Connecticut as progressive and forward-thinking in their programming as the City of Bristol,” he said. “It is my honor to be able to join such a talented team.”
