Palampur – A Beautiful Hill Station to Explore in Himachal

Palampur also known as tea garden of northern India is a green hill station located in the Kangra Valley (Distt.Kangra) of Himachal Pradesh. It is located in the foothill of Dhauladhar ranges. Palampur is a small city surrounded by tea gardens and pine forests.

In Himachal Pradesh Palampur is a special place of interest as it contains tea garden, but it is just the one aspect. The city is also known for its mild climate and abundance of water as it lies in the lap of mountains. Actually the word Palampur (city name) is derived from the local word palum which means abundance of water. The area surrounding the city acts as a passage for numerous stream of water from the Dhauladhar mountains to the plains. This causes lots of water streams across the city. One side of the city shows plains and in contrary the other side has the beautiful view of snow covered mountains (Dhauladhar ranges).

One can enjoy the scenetic beauty of lush green Kangra valley slopes and snow covered Dhauladhar ranges. This Dhauladhar Mountain range remains snow covered almost throughout the year.

Climate: Palampur is located at an altitude of 1220 meter above the sea level. Its distinctive location causes the climate to remain mild throughout the year. Palampur receives moderate weather conditions. Summers (April to June) are mild and winters (November to February) are cold.

The rainy season is little bit heavy in comparison to the other parts of Kangra valley as it lies near to Dharamsala (about 30 KM), the city that receives maximum rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.

How to Reach:

BY AIR – The nearest airport to Palampur is Gaggal airport in Dharamsala, located at a distance of around 40 km. This airport is well-connected through regular flights from important Indian cities like Chandigarh, Delhi and Kullu.

BY RAIL – Palampur also has its own railway station, Palampur Railway Station, which is just 5.3 Km away from the main area. This railway station lies on the major Pathankot- Jogindarnagar Narrow gauge railway line. Pathankot is the next nearest railway station in Punjab state, located at a distance of 113 km. Pathankot is well connected with major Indian cities like Delhi, Bhopal Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jammu, Jalandhar etc through regular trains.

BY ROAD – Palampur is very well- connected by a network of roads to most neighbouring area and important destinations in Himachal Pradesh state. Various HRTC buses (including Volvo) and private buses travel regularly to Palampur from Kullu, Chamba, Pathankot, Mandi, Dharamshala, Jogindernagar, Shimla, Chandigarh, Jalandhar etc. The capital of India “Delhi” is also very well connected to Palampur by HRTC buses (Including Volvo). Private taxiies and cabs are also availabale as an another suitable option.

There are ample tourists’ spots in Palampur and its surrounding area. Major attractions in the city and its surroundings are:

Nugal Cafe: A picnic spot located 2Km from the city.

Tashi Jong Monastery: A center for Buddists worship.

Saurabh Van Bihar: A beautiful park where one can spend some relaxed and enjoyable time. It is surrounded by lush greenery and mountains. The park has water bodies, Picnic Sheds, Children Park.

Jakhani Devi Temple: Famous temple located around 5Km from the city

Chamunda Devi temple: This famous temple is around 10km from the city.

Gopalpur Zoo: Gopalpur zoo is just 10km from Palampur on Palampur Dharmasala road.

Shobha singh art Gallery (Andreta): at a distance of just 14 km from the city there is Shobha singh art Gallery, containing paintings of famous painter of Shobha singh.

Baijnath Shiva Temple: Famous shiva temple at Baijnath is just 16 km from the city. This ancient temple is over 1000 years old.

In the city one can have plenty of shopping options. There is Amartex shopping world, Grand plaza (comprises various branded company outlets like Koutons, woodland, Nike etc), Sahni Market, Neugal shopping complex. In the city one can also shop tibetian handicrafts.
